The main premise of October 21st is to have the player move through a set path and piece together the narrative based on elements like discoverable clues, audio and visual cues, and interactions with characters and objects. The main character is based on Gretel, from the fairytale about Hansel and Gretel, however the player and their character do not initially know this. Despite the game being based off of a popular story, it is important that the narrative can be understood whether or not a player knows the tale. Some examples of how these important elements were demonstrated were making the setting change from bright and colorful, to dark and bleak, discoverable diary entries entailing details from the story, and menacing sounds of danger throughout the forest. Our goal was to initially establish a mood of inquisition, where the player feels confused, but knows that something does not feel right, then develop more obvious signs of danger as the story goes on to push the player to recognize the underlying increasing feeling of dread and morbidity that comes from the truth that they will later discover.
